UN Security Council puts out a joint statement on Tigray

The council of 15 members has for the first time stated the deteriorating situation in Tigray, Ethiopia this week. Speaking with one voice, the council called for ‘a scaled-up humanitarian response and unfettered humanitarian access to all people in need’.

Reports of crimes including sexual violence in the embattled region of Tigray have also caught the attention of the international community. The council also noted the alleged human rights violations and sexual violence and welcomed the joint investigation by the Ethiopian human rights commission and Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
